Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament
The Blessed Sacrament Confraternity was established on July 6, 1873 by St. Joseph’s Pastor Rev. Dr. S. Bauer. It is the oldest continuing society in the Diocese of Toledo.
The goal of the Confraternity is achieved through respect, reverence prayer, and adoration to Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. This pleases God and has a powerful influence on our spiritual lives.
Practicing Catholics, both men and women, may join the Confraternity and are encouraged to make frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament. As a Confraternity member you will derive many blessings from the monthly Masses and gain the blessings from the prayer groups. You will receive great satisfaction and spiritual help from the daily prayers in which you are included along with the family, friends, and community. These visits and prayers are like a lightening rod, reigning down God’s blessings on ALL of us.
Confraternity enrollment takes place in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at St. Joseph Catholic Church on the first Sunday in October after the 10:30 a.m. Mass. All area Catholics are invited to enroll. A $3.00 enrollment fee covers the cost of the Prayer Book, “Reflections and Prayers for Visits with Our Eucharistic Lord.”
Confraternity members are placed in one of twelve Divisions. Each Division has a leader called a Monitor, and your Division will be assigned to pray every twelfth week as the Divisions rotate through a twelve week cycle. Check your bulletin for your Division number and your Monitor’s name to see which week your Division will pray.
As a new member you are given a Division number, the Prayer Book, and a Monstrance designed pin. For your convenience, you are asked to write your name, the name of your Division Monitor, and your Division number on the front of your book. The Prayer Book is brought to Prayer Hour each time your Division has Prayer Week.
Prayer Hour is held in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at St. Joseph’s Monday through Friday from 2:00-3:00 p.m. You are asked to come for at least one hour of Adoration during your assigned week. If you cannot attend a Prayer Hour during your week feel free to pray with another Division.
On the First Friday of each month the 8:00 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church is for all the living and deceased members of the Confraternity. After the Mass, there is an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 4:00 p.m. Each Division prays at an assigned time. Please check the Church bulletin for your Division number and prayer time as this will rotate each month.
The Rosary is prayed thirty minutes before the funeral of a deceased member of the Confraternity. This takes place in the Church having the funeral Mass. The deceased Pastors and Priests are remembered with a Mass once a year on the second Tuesday in November. There will be a Mass said on the second Wednesday in May at the 8:00 a.m. Mass at St. Ann Catholic Church and the second Wednesday in October at the 6:30 p.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for all the living and deceased members of the Confraternity.
The suggested donation is $10.00 for the year or $2.00 for each assigned Prayer Hour week. This money is used for Masses or beautification and reverential needs to the Blessed Sacrament, and each Parish receives an annual donation for the purchase of Communion bread and wine.
You may find it difficult to commit to praying at many of the designated times, however, the spiritual graces you and your family will receive by joining the Confraternity are numerous. It’s a wonderful feeling to know you are being prayed for each day.
Our Confraternity prayer is: “May God bless our Church, country, its rulers, and its people. May America be ever in His keeping.”
