Deacon Mel Shell has been the Director of Faith Formation for St. Ann and St. Joseph Parishes since August of 2015. He was ordained Permanent Deacon in 2011, incardinated in the Diocese of Toledo and has served at St. Joseph Parish in Fremont ever since. He also coordinates Hispanic Ministry for the parish.
As DFF, he manages the CCD ministry, the RCIA ministry, sacramental preparation, Adult Faith formation, and many special projects.
As Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry, he works with local organizations and volunteers to address the physical and spiritual needs of migrant workers.
Deacon Mel is married to Cathy and they have 4 children and 3 grandchildren (so far!).
Deacon Mel has a broad base of experience. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology (specialization in Radiation Protection) from Thomas Edison State College, and an Associate of Science in Applied Science and Technology (specialization in Nuclear Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison State College).
He began his work career in the United States Navy Nuclear Power Program, serving on USS Atlanta (SSN-712), USS Cincinnati (SSN-693) and USS Emory S. Land (AS-39). He worked at the Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station as a Chemistry Technician and as a Training Instructor. He also owned his own safety consulting practice, managing the safety programs of clients in 7 states.
